Ernest Wollin, MD, PE, FACR

Ernest Wollin brings together a rare combination of medical and engineering expertise, shaping a career focused on magnetic resonance research, invention, and technology development.

Engineering & Medical Education

Dr. Wollin earned engineering degrees from New York University and the University of Illinois before receiving his medical degree from Northwestern University. He later completed training in diagnostic radiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

Medical & Technical Expertise

Dr. Wollin's background spans diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and magnetic resonance imaging, while his engineering work has focused on new methods for magnetic resonance measurement, imaging, signal analysis, and processing.

Research & Medical Imaging

Exploring New Information Within Magnetic Resonance

Dr. Wollin originated the concept of Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Mammography (MREIM), an innovative approach to breast cancer detection.


MREIM explores the combination of magnetic resonance imaging with measurements related to the electrical conductivity of tissue.


Research associated with the technology has included theoretical analysis, computer simulation, experimental work, and breast-imaging applications. Academic research at the University of South Florida documented the development of the technique by Wollin Ventures in conjunction with the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. MREIM was the subject of the dissertation entitled, “Advances in Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Mammography” by then University of South Florida Ph.D. candidate Nataliya Kovalchuk. Dr. Kovalchuk is now a Clinical Professor at Stanford Radiation Oncology department and an Adjunct Professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center.


The work reflects the broader philosophy behind Wollin Ventures: using established magnetic resonance principles in new ways to uncover additional measurable information.
